Can somone tell me how often I need to circulate the water from my tank?

at least once per hour is a minimum. So if you have a 100 gallon tank, you'd need a 100 GPH (gallon per hour) pump at a minimum. Of course that 100 GPH would be at a 0' head (height the water has to be pumped)

      Water Pump

Does it hurt if the water in the tank circulates more than 1x per hour? Is there a maximum?

I'm not aware of a maximum, but there could be one. The only thing I could think would be "bad", would be that if you empty too much water out of the tank to fast and it results in large swings in tank depth it could stress the fish. I've never read of a maximum anywhere, but most people are usually focused on how much they need as pump size is directly correlated to pump cost. So why get more pump than you need ?
