  • Hello to all from Sri Lanka

After living in Switzerland for 45 years (working as regulatory affairs specialist for Du Pont de Nemours), I (early) retired to settle down in my native Sri Lanka where I bought some land in the Southern part. After reading about aquaponics (new to me), I decided to reserve 1500 m2 to start off a pilot project. I like to fly ultra lights, play the piano and generally tinker around with mechanical things. Apart from aquaponics, I plan to build wind-mills to produce electricity or pump water. Thank you all for accepting me as member and wish you success in all that you do ! Your, Ranith

Hello all, this is new-member Ranjith (from Sri Lanka) begging your pardon for his ignorance. I have 3 questions : (1) Where does the water filter fit in; downstream from the fish tank to the growbed or upstream from the growbed to the fish tank ? (2) Must the fruit/vegetable plants be planted in washed gravel (as often shown)? Can they not be planted in red soil ? (3) Must there be an air-pump; for which purpose and exactly where should it be installed ? I have 1500m2 of land reserved for aquaponics, would love to offer employment to the rural poor and show the local community (and the government) that aquaponics is the way to go. Yours, Ranjith

      Hi Ranjith,
The grow beds are the water filter, although you can add additional filtration after the bed or a solids removal system prior to the bed if desired. There are many different medias in which you can plant. But it is ideal whichever you choose that it drains fast and well. Additional air pumps help in oxygenating the water for the fish. If you choose not to use one, reduce the fish to water ratio or provide a different method of aeration. I hope that helds some.

        Hi Ranjith
We at Wellington see Aquaponics as a solution to much of the world food security problems. Particularily when using a living wall to grow the plants as it allows vertical gardening and as the worl population rises that will be importantr. Wellington Secondary School has entered the BC Green Games. To win money for our AquaPonics project we need votes! Go to http://www.bcgreengames.ca/component/project/?id=589 create an acct and vote for Wellington
